Extra Calligraphy class _ Friday, May 29

Professor  Kyoji Nakagawa invited U of C students to participate in a special calligraphy practice session in his studio on campus.

At the beginning, Nakagawa-sensei did demonstrations for us.

When he hold a brush, it has a life and moves on a paper so naturally and beautifully.  When he wrote "花(hana = flower)" , it looked like a drawing.

Shodo (calligraphy) club members came to the studio to teach our students how to use brushes and how to write words.

Students spent two hours practice calligraphy and improved dramatically. - Please see photos below.

The smaller brush which I hold costs about $2000CAN!

Students use as many paper (for calligraphy) as possible for practice.  Nakagawa-sensei kindly provided three special calligraphy papers per students for their final work.  Students did a fantastic job!

Nakagawa-sensei is very active and he has exhibitions not only in Japan but also in Europe this summer.  It is sad to know that this is the first and last time for us to visit his studio for lessons since he is going to retire next March.

We really appreciate for his kind offer to use his studio to experience calligraphy.  We also thanks for the calligraphy club members and Mr. Usui at the Senshu University to plan this special class for us.
